Dam Safety, Surveillance & Asset Integrity

§01 / ABOUT

Rigorous, practice-led dam-safety education

The Advanced Certificate Course on Dam Safety, Surveillance & Asset Integrity is a practice-led programme covering the full dam-safety lifecycle - from legislation and design philosophy through on-site inspection, instrumentation, non-destructive testing and geophysical diagnostics to flood-risk assessment and emergency preparedness.

It is delivered fully online by AF Academy (Aqua Foundation Academy), pairing decades of applied engineering practice in water resources and dam safety with a structured, lifecycle-wide curriculum accessible to engineers across government, PSU and private sectors.

§02 / MISSION

Mission

Bringing field-proven dam-safety knowledge to engineers across India

Our mission is to bring field-proven dam-inspection and safety-assurance knowledge into a structured curriculum for engineers in government departments, public-sector undertakings and private organisations responsible for India's dams and conveyance networks.

Dam-safety knowledge has long lived in the field, built up by engineers through direct experience with existing structures rather than through a systematic curriculum. We bring that working knowledge into an organised, lifecycle-wide programme: every stage taught by engineers who have inspected and assessed real dams, with the methods, judgement and documentation formats that the sector actually relies on.

The result is a common technical reference that water-resources and irrigation engineers, dam owners and safety officers, consultants and contractors, and students can use - whether they plan, operate, inspect, investigate or rehabilitate dams and conveyance networks.

§03 / DIAGNOSTICS

Diagnostics & condition assessment

Geophysical NDT for distressed dams - detecting what visual inspection cannot

The advanced investigation anchor of this programme - seismic tomography, electrical resistivity imaging, MASW and GPR used together to locate leaks, internal erosion and cavities in existing structures.

Geophysical methods form an important part of an integrated diagnostic toolkit for investigating concealed defects in dam bodies, foundations and associated structures. Where visual inspection reveals surface symptoms, geophysical methods reach inside the structure and foundation to map anomalies - identifying leakage pathways, zones of internal erosion and concealed cavities that surface observation cannot locate.

The principal techniques covered in this programme are seismic tomography, electrical resistivity imaging (ERI), multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR). Each method works on a different physical principle - acoustic wave velocity, electrical conductivity contrast, shear-wave velocity profiling and electromagnetic reflection - so they are used in combination to cross-validate findings and reduce ambiguity. Optical-fibre temperature and strain sensing adds continuous distributed monitoring to capture changes that point-measurement instruments miss.

Applied to distressed dams, these combined techniques locate the origin of seepage, delineate internal erosion fronts before they reach a critical stage, and identify cavities that may indicate piping or material loss. That matters because internal erosion is the leading failure mechanism for embankment dams worldwide. Early geophysical diagnosis gives engineers the evidence base to decide whether to monitor, repair or intervene - and to prioritise action among a portfolio of ageing structures. This programme teaches the selection, deployment and interpretation of these methods so engineers can carry out or commission reliable condition assessments.
